In the news recently has been talk of renewable power projects so large that they could potentially supply power not just to whole countries, but whole regions.
For Europe: a solar farm almost the size of Wales located in North Africa
and in central Africa, a series of hydroelectric schemes on the Congo river.
(In a similar vein the UK has longstanding plans for a tidal barrage on the Severn estuary that is now getting serious consideration)
To transmit all this generated power? We need new thinking on transmission lines – HVDC and smart grids. Hopefully I can explain later…
